What you should know about UVC

After more than 14 months of the pandemic, we have been adjusting ourselves to a better hygiene level. From wearing masks, keeping our distance, staying home, and washing our hands.

Aside from that, scientists and engineers have tried to develop several new ways to disinfect or get rid of bacteria and viruses on various surfaces to help the spread of the virus. One of the ways to do it is by using Ultraviolet lights, specifically UV-C.

Hospitals have been using UV-C lights for a while to disinfect surfaces, long before the pandemic. But what are exactly UV-C light and UV light itself?

UV or ultraviolet light is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths shorter than visible lights, but longer than X rays. This means we can’t see UV lights because it’s outside of our eye’s capability to see. There are several types of ultraviolet, UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C radiation has a strong germicidal and embryocidal effect. It also can cause burning of the skin and inflammation of eyes.

A safe utilization of UV-C is important because the exposure to it is harmful to any living being and could also potentially cause cancer. Other than that, prolonged exposure of UV-C can degrade materials that’s been exposed.

If you think UVC light is a necessity for you to disinfect effectively as a precaution from Covid-19, and you can afford it, here’s some things to know about how it works for common use, and how to use it safely.

There are several devices that you can use at home, there’s UV-C light box, handheld portable UV-C light, and there’s also UV-C luminaire.

You can use a UV-C light box as a disinfectant for your clothes and gadgets just after you go out of your house, you can put everything in the box and turn it on for several minutes before washing the clothes or using your gadget again. This way is the easiest and safest way to use UV-C because there’s little risk of exposing yourself to the harmful effects of UV-C. While with the handheld device, its flexibility allows you to shine the light to any kinds of surfaces, but kindly be more careful not to expose yourself or others with it, because exposure to the light can be very harmful to humans, and even pets.

UV-C luminaire can be used to disinfect everything in your room, including the air inside. This method uses a big UV-C light that will expose your room to it and disinfect everything that the light shines, you need to be very careful to not let anyone in the room and not leave it on for too long.

UV-C light is a very powerful tool that can help us disinfect surfaces, but also very dangerous if we don’t know how to safely use it.
